0001: Good Things Happen. Bad Things Happen. In Adventure And In Life.

Good Things Happen. Bad Things Happen. In Adventure And In Life.

193 words, < 1 minute

There is a famous Zen Kōan that describes a series of bad events, followed by good events, followed by bad events, and so on. The moral of the story is that we don’t know the twist and turns of life, so we should practice acceptance and avoid the rollercoaster of emotion. There is no objective good or bad – things just happen.

Detachment might help us get through a challenging moment, but I don’t think we should live a life without recognizing ups and downs. Perspective is subjective is a powerful idea. We choose how to interpret events. We define the spectrum of good and bad in our lives, and good and bad can exist simultaneously.

Good things don’t cancel bad things, and bad things don’t cancel good things. The magnitude of either does not matter, and they don’t exist on a balancing scale. They are simply different things, like sunshine and rain. And like sunshine and rain, our perspective defines how we see the absence or interaction of these events.
