Mt. Jefferson Wilderness
Mt. Jefferson Wilderness is a mountain wonderland in Oregon’s Cascade Mountains. Snowy summits and alpine lakes dot the landscape, and the maintained trail system provides countless opportunities for backpackers to find adventures. Panoramic views, alpine fishing, swimming, mushroom gathering, diverse wildlife, and wildflower blooms are all accessible in less than a 2-hour drive from Bend, Corvallis, Eugene, and Salem, Oregon.
One of our favorite things about this section of the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness is that you can create a fantastic loop hike that is close to Bend, OR, and other major cities, and explore a wilderness area. Use the Marion Lake Trailhead, Duffy Lake Trailhead, and Pine Ridge Trailhead to create a classic 3-day 2-night Oregon backpacking trip to less popular destinations. It is the perfect place for a weekend backpacking trip. Guide Notes contain a suggested route and extensive information about alternative routes that save you hours of research.
Overnight Backpacking Trips
The Mt. Jefferson Wilderness Backpacking Adventure Guide Notes is an in-depth overview of the hiking trails (including distances, elevation, GPS routes, and more), but more importantly, all of the information is organized to make it easy for you to plan your adventure. The primary overnight backpacking route is a 21-mile loop with side trips to summits and lakes. We also describe alternative routes to help you modify your adventure based on parking permits, time, and skill level.
Hiking Trails
The Mt. Jefferson hiking trails described in this book include the Duffy Lake Trail, Blue Lake Trail, Pine Ridge Trail, Marion Lake Trail, Turpentine Trail, Santiam Lake Trail, Red Butte, Marion Mountain, and Temple Lake Trail. We also share campsite information for Duffy Lake, Mowich Lake, Eight Lake Region, Santiam Lake, Marion Mountain, Marion Lake, and Turpentine Peak.
Mt. Jefferson Wilderness Permits
Central Cascade Wilderness permits are required for hiking and backpacking during peak season. Day Use permits are required for popular trailheads during the summer. A Northwest Forest Pass is required for parking at the trailheads.
