There are fantastic overlooks like Lookout Mountain, Graybeard Mountain, and Walker’s Knob with wonderful unobstructed views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The biodiversity of Montreat’s protected wilderness is astounding and contains many species of plants and animals that are unique to Western North Carolina. We aren’t the only ones who love Montreat. The accessibility of the Montreat hiking trails make it the perfect place for a last-minute wilderness getaway, and one of the best places to introduce a friend to backpacking near Asheville, NC. The trails are well marked and easy to navigate. In less than 30 minutes, you can leave downtown Asheville and park at one of the many trailheads.

There are two backcountry shelters that are less than 4 miles from a trailhead and give you access to some of the best sunrise and sunset views of the mountains. The shelters are maintained by the Montreat Conference Center, and for a nominal fee, you gain exclusive access to a rustic platform shelter. This makes Montreat one of the closest and most affordable places to camp near Asheville, NC.
