The accessibility of the Montreat hiking trails make it the perfect place for a last-minute wilderness getaway, and one of the best places to introduce a friend to backpacking near Asheville, NC. The trails are well marked and easy to navigate. In less than 30 minutes, you can leave downtown Asheville and park at one of the many trailheads.
There are two backcountry shelters that are less than 4 miles from a trailhead and give you access to some of the best sunrise and sunset views of the mountains. The shelters are maintained by the Montreat Conference Center, and for a nominal fee, you gain exclusive access to a rustic platform shelter.
